A Glossary of terms and acronyms common to ABW*

0-Day "0-day" is a term used in the Warez-scene to describe the releases by all the cracking/warez/release groups on that particular day. <more_info>

ABCDI The alt.binaries.cd.image newsgroup. A place to find complete CD and DVD images, suitable for burning, in order to examine software before purchase.

ABG The alt.binaries.games newsgroup. A place to find (mostly) IBM-PC compatible games, usually ripped..

ABWI The alt.binaries.warez.ibm-pc newsgroup. The granddaddy of Warez newsgroups, you can find most anything here for IBM-PCs (except games, which found a home in ABG, et al. and CD/DVD-Images, which are in ABCDI, et al. )

akookla A very low form of life- UseNet scum. The term is a catchall for pedophiles, netkops, kooks, psychopaths, and jackasses.  A corrupted form of akula, the nym of a paradigm for an akookla.

BIN Bin is a "BIN"ary file type which is used for CD-images made by CDRWin (http://www.goldenhawk.com) and Fireburner (http://www.fireburner.com) Other programs now support the BIN file type--at least for burning; notably Alcohol and Nero.

Binary File A file which is not in "readable" format, such as ASCII -text, but rather is represented as bytes of data, such as in an archive or an executable program, or a .WAV file.

ECP Excessive Cross Posting: When a post is made to multiple groups in excess of a service-provider's  maximum-allowable number (usually ranging from four to six groups,) after which the post can be considered ECP. Check your service-provider's TOS/AUP (Terms of Service/Acceptable Use Policy) for their number, but four is usually permissible, while more than that is very often ECP.

EMP Excessive Multi-Posting or Multiple Posts: The same post made multiple times to the same group(s). Sometimes called "Billboarding" or "Hammering" Most service-providers have limits on that as well as ECP, so there too you would need to read your service-provider's policies to determine the maximum allowed. Note that in the Warez groups ONE identical post (per day) is the maximum the group's users consider appropriate (barring the occasional slip of the ENTER-key, of course.). Any more than that is considered "Billboarding" or "Hammering", and the author is often kill-filed on sight.

FILE A single cohesive unit of data, such as readme.txt, or eclhrm32.zip. It can be copied, moved, or deleted by Windows File Manager.

FOAD F*ck Off And Die. It means what it says <g>. Usually someone hasn't had their chill-pill for the day, and/or has been mightily pissed-off by someone.

FLUFFY The owner of Usenet--a cat. A white Angora to be more precise, of mild disposition (some say an altered drunk, but who knows for certain, eh?)

HAND Have A Nice Day. Frequently used sarcastically.

HWIH "Here's What I Have, please post fills" - A post of some, but not all, of the files of an archive set, made by someone mistakenly thinking that by posting part of an archive, someone will give him the fills he needs. This almost never works, and the poster has made himself look like a greedy newbie. What does work is to say instead, "Have ALL of such-and-such EXCEPT file##.zip and file##.zip. Anyone need any fills?" Then the people who also have incomplete archives of that post will contact him  to get their fills, at which point he can make deals with them for the fills he needs. Additionally, one gets to make some good contacts for ICQ and FTP and such, for the future. You can bet that there will be more incomplete archives that will need fills, and it is sure nice to have some buddies on different news servers who can help.

IMHO In My Humble Opinion. Often used sarcastically by someone not in the least bit humble. User discretion is advised.

Mjølnër A "Warez God" (Q.V.) sometimes abbreviated as "MoJo".  But please always remember and never forget, "There can be only one."

NARC or NARK A person who reports a poster to an ISP/NSP or to a copyright holder, or piracy-prevention group, such as the SPA (Software Protections Agency). A NARC is universally despised, as there is NO NARCING IN WAREZ, NONE, EVER!  The present laws (U.S.C.C.) REQUIRE that anyone (such as a service-provider) that becomes aware of a felony (such as the posting of copyrighted material to UseNet) notify the relevant legal authorities. Failure to do so is itself a felony. So anyone reporting any poster, to anyone, for any reason, is a NARC.

NNRP Network News Reader Protocol. The standard of commands and data formats used by news reader clients, such as Agent, to read (and post) to a news-server. The actual protocol is hidden from the end-user, as it is with mail (POP/SMTP) and the web (HTTP) etc.

NNTP Network News Transfer Protocol. The standard protocol for news servers, the details of which aren't important to the average reader. It allows news-servers to send news to each-other, and to "clients", which are news readers. (See NNRP, above.)

Nym A name used on UseNet or IRC: a "handle" that is not the real name of the person. From either/both pseudonym or anonymous.  Like a nom-de-plume for writers, as Mark Twain was the "nym" of Samuel Clements, except he wasn't trying to remain anonymous. In his case it was simply a pseudonym, while on UseNet or IRC (Internet Relay Chat) it is usually used to secure anonymity as the primary function. Nyms are often chosen from books, movies, cartoons, mythology, etc. Chances are if you see someone posting as MarkTwain, his name isn't  Mark, or Twain, or Sam, or Clements.

NZB   An NZB is an XML file generated either by the posting program, or available from other sources such as http://www.newzbin.com which contains the Message ID's of all the parts of a multipart binary post. Some newsreaders can use this list as an aid to get all the parts of a post.

PDF Portable Document File. An Adobe format that can be read on multiple computer systems, including Macintosh, Windows and Unix.

PLONK  That was the sound of your nym landing in someone's KillFile. For the most part, this means that you have been relegated to invisibility for that person, and they may never see your nym again. See also WTMKF

PMFJI Pardon Me For Jutting In (some folks say "Jumping" instead of "Jutting"): Expression used when someone butts into a conversation/thread/exchange to offer an opinion, or a correction, or to ask a question, etc.

POST To post, as a verb it means to send to Usenet. It can be either a text-only post, or it can have one or more attachments of any kind. As a noun, it commonly refers to a complete cohesive set of related files uploaded to the UseNet. It may be a single zip or rar or NFO; or it may be a fully prepared archive set of a major release spanning many individual zip or rar files, which taken together constitute "the post."

PROXY  A proxy is a computer running software which will forward requests and data-packets from another computer on the net. A proxy can be used to speed-up web surfing, to tunnel through a corporate firewall, to protect a computer or network from spying/hacking/attacks, etc. Proxies act as bi-directional relays between an originating computer, and a destination computer.

PROXY POSTING This is a method of posting to Usenet via proxies, which can increase the anonymity of the poster to near absolute.

RAR An archive-type created by WinRAR. (See Working with Archives for more information on WinRAR.)

RIP A cracked or hacked version of a application/game with most of the video, sounds, and junk (Internet Explorer <g>) taken out. The EXE has often been altered to allow it to run from the hard drive instead of the CD, or other copy-protections have been removed.

ROTFLMAO Rolling On The Floor, Laughing My Ass Off.

SPORGE  A made-up word combining SPam and fORGE. It's often neither, rather it is usually a flood of meaningless messages intended to disrupt a newsgroup. Most often with a variety of subjects and posting names, all generated by programs written for the specific purpose of disrupting newsgroups. Go figure.

TIA Thanks In Advance. Not good form to use this, as it has become associated with the "gimme-gimme" type of person. Just say "Thank you" or something similar.

TELECINE (Or "TC") Used to refer to a bootleg movie copy that is taken directly from the reel to digital format using professional equipment. It requires both access to the film itself and the digitizing equipment, and, as a consequence of the complexity, is uncommon. The result of the process is a very high-quality copy which, like Telesyncs (QV) gets distributed in VCD, SVCD, DivX, XVid, or DVD format on the internet.

TELESYNC (OR "TS") Used to refer to a bootleg movie copy that is shot using a professional camera, either in an empty theater or from the projectionist's booth, with a tape-recorder connected directly to the stereo sound source (often with wireless microphones taped directly to the theater's speakers,) and 'synched' to the video by computer. These copies are then distributed in VCD, SVCD, DivX, XVid, or DVD format on the internet. The quality is nearly as good as Telecine (QV) when properly done.

TROLL  1: n: On UseNet a troll can be someone who is "trolling" for responses, the way a fisherman trolls for fish- he puts a baited hook in the water and sees how many nibbles he gets on it--or

2: n: The post itself On UseNet the baited-hook is a controversial or otherwise "magnetic" post, made for the amusement of a troll (1), to see how many people he can catch responding to it. An obvious example is the "Subj: God is DEAD!" made to a newsgroup such as alt.religion.###.  Most trolls (1 or 2) are more subtle, and many are amusing. As a verb, "to troll" is the act of making such posts. Sometimes it is a single post, sometimes it is an elaborate hoax perpetrated over a number of posts, usually for the amusement of the troll. Many experienced veteran readers "catch on" to what is happening, and enjoy watching the action themselves. A good Troll can be a valuable addition to a newsgroup <g>

UFF Usenet Freedom Fighters.  An elite group of people dedicated to keeping the User Network (UseNet) free from wannabe netkops and martinets. Think of them as "Ghost Busters" for UseNet. (But not 'chubby' Dan Akroyd)

WAREZ WAREZ is any software which is "copyright challenged" <g>, and is "ready-to-run", including everything necessary- be it serial, crack, patch, or full-retail version. Warez includes applications and games, both as rips and  isos (generic term for full cd/dvd-image)

WAREZ GOD You, after you have uploaded a sufficient quantity of fresh, never before seen, warez to Usenet. How much is that quantity, you ask? Start posting, we'll let you know when you have qualified. <g>

WINALL A term used to mean that the file/application/game involved can be run on all versions of Windows. A caveat however:- this is not likely to include 16-bit Windows- like Windows 3.1.  If you have Windows 95 SR2 or newer, and you see this, you should be ok.

WTMKF Welcome To My Kill File (Filter). For the most part, this means that you have been relegated to invisibility by that person. You have been added to that persons killfile, and they may never see your nym again. Sometimes used in lieu of PLONK (Q.V.)

yEnc yEncoding. A method of encoding 8-bit, binary files for UseNet--which is a 7-bit, text-based system. 8-bit binary files have to have some method of encoding into 7 bits so they can be transmitted to UseNet as text. There are three main methods in use to accomplish this: UUEncoding (Unix to Unix Encoding), MIME (Multi-purpose Internet Mail Extensions, also called base 64) and yEnc. Of these three, yEnc is the most efficient in terms of bytes transferred.
