This CD-Image FAQ is intended to give you the basic information you need to know for handling the CD-Images you find on the UseNet: It will tell you what types of image-files you are likely to encounter, and how to deal with them. It will try to provide answers and solutions for the most common questions and problems you may encounter with CD-Images posted to UseNet. It will also attempt to teach you how to create your own CD-Images for backup from "silvers" (pressed commercial disks) or from your own disks.
We will also be touching on the closely-related DVD family of disks and burners. For the most part the tools and techniques remain the same. Where they differ, those differences will be pointed out.
Additionally we will be discussing the current tools being used to accomplish the tasks of creating, burning, and mounting disk images, and the techniques employed by many successful "old-timers" in handling them.
